VERTICAL BORDERLAND III

Flower Fractals I & II and Sweet Flag Layering are part of the site-specific Vertical Borderland project installed at the Endoscopy Unit at Danderyd Hospital in Stockholm. The project is inspired by medicinal plants, plant philosophy, and botanical archives. Reflecting the unit’s focus on stomach and gut health, the works highlight three plants traditionally used to soothe and support these organs: Geum urbanum (Herba Benedicta), Glycyrrhiza glabra (liquorice), and Acorus calamus (sweet flag).

Spanning corridor installations, a ceiling work in the post-operative room, and framed collages composed of enamel plates and monoprints, the project is experienced throughout the hospital, alongside the standalone enamel collages presented here.

These works explore medicinal plants through fractal principles, in which the three healing plants are fragmented, repeated, and reconfigured into rhythmic, growing forms. The compositions mirror botanical processes, unfolding outward from the wall and echoing the logic of plant growth—drawn from botanical systems and translated into a spatial experience of attentiveness.

Located near the post-operative room, the works function both as visual wayfinders and as calm visual sanctuaries, offering a soothing mental landscape. Light interacts gently with the enamel surfaces, creating a dynamic interplay of reflection, color, and shadow. This subtle movement enhances the immersive quality of the works, guiding the eye to wander and pause. Together, the fractal compositions encourage slow perception and embodied attention during waiting.
